How to Read a Proprietary Blend Label: The Order Tells You More Than You Think

Quick answer

A proprietary blend prints one total weight and lists its ingredients from heaviest to lightest, with no single amounts. That order still tells you something: the ingredient in place n can weigh at most the total divided by n. In the Sugar Reset 200 mg blend, gymnema sits eighth, so it is 25 mg or less per serving.

The basics

What does a proprietary blend mean on a supplement label?

It is a group of ingredients printed under one name with one total weight. FDA rules ask for the words "Proprietary Blend" or a similar name, the blend's total on the same line, and the ingredients below it in descending order by weight (FDA, Labeling guide).

What the rules do not ask for is the weight of each ingredient. Nutrients with a Daily Value, such as chromium, are the exception. They must appear on their own line with their own amount (FDA, Labeling guide). That is why the Sugar Reset label prints chromium at 0.7 mcg and everything else as one 200 mg block.

The math

How does label order show the most an ingredient can weigh?

Every ingredient weighs at least as much as the one after it. So if an ingredient sits in place n, the n ingredients up to and including it together weigh at least n times its amount. They cannot weigh more than the whole blend. Divide the total by the position and you have a ceiling.

PlaceIngredientMost it can weighNamed on the sales page?
1Maca root200 mg (and at least about 9 mg)Yes

8Gymnema leaf25 mgYes
12Panax ginseng aerialAbout 17 mgYes
18Monoammonium glycyrrhizinateAbout 11 mgNo

The first ingredient works the other way too. It must weigh at least the average, 200 mg divided by 22, or about 9 mg. A ceiling is only an upper bound. The real amount could be far lower.

1 · Maca is first, so it is the largest share: at least about 9 mg, and up to the whole 200 mg in theory.

  • 7 · Green teaup to about 29 mg
  • 8 · Gymnemaup to 25 mg

  • 3 · Guaranaup to about 67 mg of seed extract; caffeine not printed
  • 18 · Licorice compoundup to about 11 mg

Blend ingredients are listed from heaviest to lightest (FDA, Labeling guide), so the ingredient in place k can weigh at most 200 ÷ k mg per serving. That is our math from the label, not a lab test. Chromium sits outside the blend with its own amount: 0.7 mcg. Tap or hover a column for its name.

Each column is a ceiling, not a measured amount. The full panel, line by line, is on the Supplement Facts page.

Ads vs label

How do you compare a blend label with the ads?

Brand graphic Inside Sugar Reset with tiles for chromium picolinate, gymnema leaf, African mango seed, green tea leaf, maca root and Panax ginseng aerial extract around two bottles
The brand's Inside Sugar Reset graphic names six ingredients and shows no amounts. Its ginseng tile pictures roots; the label lists the aerial part, leaf and stem.

Start with the fair part. All six ingredients the Sugar Reset sales page names really are on the label (Sugar Reset sales page, October 2026). Then look at where they sit. Five of the six share the blend with 17 ingredients the sales page never mentions, including guarana, a caffeine source (MSKCC, Guarana). The label versus sales page breakdown goes through each one.

Your turn

How to read any proprietary blend in five steps

  1. Find the total

Look for the words Proprietary Blend and the weight beside them, such as 200 mg.

  2. Count the ingredients

Number every ingredient under the blend from top to bottom.

  3. Divide by the place

For the ingredient you care about, divide the total by its place. That is the most it can weigh.

  4. Check the serving

Note the serving size and how many servings a day the label allows, then multiply.

  5. Compare with research

Look up the dose used in studies. If your ceiling is far below it, the study does not describe your bottle.

Why it matters

Why compare a blend's ceilings with research doses?

Because a study only tells you about the dose it tested. FTC guidance says the evidence behind a health claim should match the product's dose and formula (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance). Gymnema shows the gap. LiverTox gives a typical dose of 400 mg three times a day (LiverTox, Gymnema). A 1 mL serving of Sugar Reset holds 25 mg at most.

Even at 2 droppers a day, and assuming a dropper holds about 1 mL, that is 50 mg or less. Research on the herb does not carry over to an amount that small. More on each herb on the ingredients page.

FAQ

Proprietary blend label FAQ

What does proprietary blend mean on a supplement?

It means several ingredients are grouped under one name with one total weight. FDA rules require the blend's total and its ingredients in order of weight, heaviest first, but not each ingredient's amount. Nutrients with a Daily Value, such as chromium, must still be listed separately.

Are proprietary blends legal?

Yes. FDA labeling rules allow them as long as the label names the blend, prints its total weight on the same line and lists the ingredients in descending order by weight. A blend is a legal way to keep individual amounts private, not a sign of anything improper.

How do you figure out how much of an ingredient is in a blend?

You cannot learn the exact amount, but you can find a ceiling. Divide the blend's total weight by the ingredient's place in the list. In a 200 mg blend, the fourth ingredient weighs 50 mg or less.

Why do companies use proprietary blends?

Companies do not have to explain, and the Sugar Reset sales page does not. A blend keeps a recipe private. It also means buyers cannot check whether each ingredient matches the doses used in research.

How much gymnema is in the Sugar Reset blend?

The label does not say. Gymnema is eighth of 22 in a 200 mg blend, so it can weigh at most 25 mg per 1 mL serving. LiverTox gives 400 mg three times daily as the usual dose.

Is the first ingredient in a blend the main one?

It is the heaviest, which is the one fact label order guarantees. In Sugar Reset, maca comes first, so it weighs at least about 9 mg and could be up to 200 mg. Heaviest does not mean most researched or most effective.
