Pet safety

Xylitol in Supplements and Dogs: What Every Pet Owner Should Know

Quick answer

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that sweetens many sugar-free products, including Sugar Reset drops. In people it does not trigger insulin release. In dogs it causes a strong insulin surge and a fast, deep drop in blood sugar, often within 10 to 60 minutes. If a dog gets into the bottle, call a veterinarian right away, even before symptoms show.

The danger

Why is xylitol dangerous for dogs?

Because a dog's body treats xylitol like sugar and releases a flood of insulin. The FDA explains that this causes a rapid, profound drop in blood sugar in dogs, while people do not get that insulin release at all (FDA, Xylitol and dogs).

The low can start within 10 to 60 minutes and can be life-threatening (FDA, Xylitol and dogs). The FDA lists dietary supplements among the products that may contain xylitol, so the bathroom cabinet deserves the same care as the candy jar.

On the label

Does Sugar Reset contain xylitol?

Yes. It is one of nine Other Ingredients, outside the 200 mg blend.

The Sugar Reset label lists: glycerin, water, organic lemon extract, stevia extract 97% (Reb A), xylitol, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, citric acid and natural flavors. The amount of xylitol is not printed. No other ingredient has a weight either, so you cannot tell how much one bottle holds.

Warning signs

What are the signs of xylitol poisoning in a dog?

Signs of low blood sugar in a dog can appear within an hour. The FDA lists (FDA, Xylitol and dogs):

  • Vomiting
  • Weakness or tiredness
  • Staggering or trouble walking
  • Collapse
  • Seizures

A dog may look fine at first. Do not wait for these signs if you know or suspect it got into the bottle.

Act fast

What should you do if a dog drinks Sugar Reset?

  1. Call a vet now

The FDA advises contacting a veterinarian immediately (FDA, Xylitol and dogs). Use an emergency clinic after hours.

  2. Bring the bottle

The label shows xylitol and the other ingredients. Say how full the bottle was.

  3. Follow the vet's advice

Do not try home remedies first. Every minute counts with a fast drop.

Prevention

How should you store Sugar Reset drops in a home with dogs?

Four habits that keep the bottle out of reach. Scroll through them.

  1. 01

    Cap it every time

Screw the dropper cap on tight right after each dose. A loose cap is an easy target for a curious nose.

  2. 02

    Store it up high

Keep the bottle in a closed cabinet, not on a nightstand, counter or low shelf a dog can reach.

  3. 03

    Mind bags and pockets

Do not leave the bottle in a purse, gym bag or coat on the floor. Dogs dig into bags.

  4. 04

    Wipe up drips

Clean any spilled drops at once, and never let a dog lick the dropper or your hand after a dose.

The label already says to keep the bottle away from heat, light and humidity and out of the reach of children. A closed, high cabinet meets every one of those rules and keeps pets away too. The full routine is on the how to use page.

And for you

Is xylitol safe for people with blood sugar concerns?

Xylitol does not trigger insulin release in people, the FDA says (FDA, Xylitol and dogs). That is one reason sugar-free products use it. One open question remains.

A 2024 study in the European Heart Journal linked the highest blood levels of xylitol with a higher 3-year risk of major heart and blood vessel events (Witkowski, Eur Heart J 2024). In 10 healthy volunteers, a xylitol drink raised blood xylitol and made platelets more reactive. The study shows a link, not proof that xylitol causes harm, and the authors call for more research.

Keep perspective

The study did not test Sugar Reset or a dropper's worth of anything. If you have heart concerns, show your clinician the full label. Other cautions are on the side effects page.

Why it is there

Why do sugar-free supplements use xylitol?

To taste sweet without sugar. Herbal extracts are often bitter, and a liquid sits on the tongue before you swallow it. Sweeteners make the dose easier to take.

Sugar Reset uses two. Stevia extract (Reb A) is a steviol glycoside, 200 to 400 times sweeter than sugar; the FDA has not questioned GRAS notices for purified forms of 95% or more (FDA, Sweeteners). Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that, in people, does not trigger insulin release (FDA, Xylitol and dogs). Both are common in sugar-free products, and that is exactly why dog owners should read every label.

For a person with blood sugar concerns, the sweeteners are not the main story. The Supplement Facts page covers the rest of the label, line by line.

Quick check

How do you spot xylitol on any supplement label?

  • Read the Other Ingredients line, not just the front of the bottle.
  • Look for xylitol or sugar alcohol by name.
  • Treat "sugar-free" liquids, chews and sprays as suspects until you check.
  • Store every bottle that lists it like a medicine, out of a dog's reach.

FAQ

Xylitol and dogs FAQ

Which Sugar Reset ingredient is risky for dogs?

Yes. Xylitol is listed among the Other Ingredients on the Sugar Reset label, next to stevia, glycerin and two preservatives. The amount is not printed. Keep the bottle where dogs cannot reach it, and call a vet right away if a dog gets into it.

How fast does xylitol affect dogs?

Fast. The FDA says low blood sugar can appear within 10 to 60 minutes after a dog eats xylitol. It can be life-threatening, so call a veterinarian immediately instead of waiting to see whether symptoms develop.

How much xylitol is toxic to a dog?

Our sources do not give a safe amount, and the Sugar Reset label does not print how much xylitol it contains. That makes any amount a reason to call your vet. Tell them the product name and how much liquid might be missing.

Is xylitol bad for humans?

In people, xylitol does not trigger insulin release, per the FDA. A 2024 study linked high blood xylitol with more heart events over 3 years, but it showed an association, not cause. People with heart disease should raise it with their clinician.

What sweeteners are in Sugar Reset drops?

Two: stevia extract 97% (Reb A) and xylitol. High-purity steviol glycosides have GRAS status with the FDA. No sugar is listed. Glycerin, lemon extract and natural flavors also add taste.

Can cats get sick from xylitol?

Our sources only describe dogs, so we cannot say how cats react. The safe habit is the same for every pet: keep any product that lists xylitol in a closed cabinet, and call your veterinarian if an animal swallows some.

What are the symptoms of xylitol poisoning in dogs?

The FDA lists vomiting, weakness, staggering, collapse and seizures, all signs of a sudden drop in blood sugar. A dog may seem normal at first. If you suspect it swallowed any xylitol, contact a veterinarian immediately.
