Supplements and Diabetes Medicines: Why Low Blood Sugar Is the Risk to Watch

Quick answer

The main risk of mixing a blood sugar supplement with diabetes medicine is a low: a reading under 70 mg/dL. The ADA warns that some supplement ingredients can intensify diabetes medicines. Insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides carry the highest risk. Sugar Reset holds several ingredients studied for glucose effects, in small amounts. Ask your clinician before adding it, and never stop a medicine for a supplement.

The basic problem

Can a supplement change how diabetes medicine works?

It can. The American Diabetes Association says some supplement ingredients could intensify the effect of diabetes medicines and cause low blood sugar, while others may raise blood sugar (ADA, Vitamins and supplements). Either way, your numbers can move in ways your care plan did not expect.

The same ADA page says supplements are not proven to lower blood glucose. The upside is unproven; the downside is a low you must catch and treat.

Supplements also reach shelves without FDA approval (FDA, Dietary supplements Q&A), so no one screens a formula for medicine interactions first. That job falls to you and your clinician.

Medicines

Which diabetes medicines carry the highest risk of lows?

NIDDK names three groups.

01

Insulin

Any type, by pen, pump or syringe. NIDDK lists insulin first among the diabetes medicines that can cause lows (NIDDK, Hypoglycemia).

02

Sulfonylureas

A group of diabetes pills that includes glipizide. NIDDK lists them as a cause of lows too (NIDDK, Hypoglycemia).

03

Meglitinides

Another group of diabetes pills, named in the same NIDDK list (NIDDK, Hypoglycemia).

Not sure which group your pills belong to? Ask your pharmacist, and bring every drop, tea or powder you take.

Know the signs

What does low blood sugar feel like?

For many people with diabetes, low means a reading below 70 mg/dL. Common signs come on fast (NIDDK, Hypoglycemia):

  • Shakiness, sweating or feeling jittery
  • Sudden hunger
  • Dizziness or confusion
  • Irritability or a change in mood
  • A fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Headache
Treat a low right away

A reading below 70 mg/dL with symptoms needs treatment at once, the way your care team taught you. Severe lows can cause fainting or seizures (NIDDK, Hypoglycemia). Very high readings with extreme thirst or confusion also need prompt care.

Sugar Reset, line by line

Which Sugar Reset ingredients could affect blood sugar?

Several, at least on paper. The sources below describe each ingredient in general, not this product.

Sugar Reset ingredients with a published note on blood sugar or diabetes medicines. Amounts per 1 mL serving come from label order; only chromium is printed.
IngredientMost per servingWhat the source says
Chromium0.7 mcg (printed)May add to the effect of insulin and other diabetes drugs, raising the risk of lows (NIH ODS, Chromium)
Gymnema leaf25 mgSmall trials showed mild drops in fasting glucose; the typical dose is 400 mg three times a day (LiverTox, Gymnema)
Panax ginseng aerialAbout 17 mgRoot research is inconclusive on blood sugar; leaf and stem data come from animals and test tubes (NCCIH, Asian ginseng) (Wang et al., Chin Med 2009)
L-arginine12.5 mgMayo Clinic notes it may lower blood sugar (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine)
Capsicum20 mgOne study suggests capsaicin may raise insulin and lower glucose (MSKCC, Cayenne)
Xylitol (sweetener)Not publishedDoes not trigger insulin release in people (FDA, Xylitol and dogs)

The ceilings come from a simple rule: blend ingredients are listed heaviest first (FDA, Labeling guide), so the eighth item can weigh no more than 200 mg divided by 8. That is our math, not a lab test. The real amounts could be lower.

Most of these amounts are tiny. At 2 droppers a day, if a dropper holds about 1 mL, chromium reaches just 1.4 mcg, 4% of the Daily Value (see the chromium dose article). But 22 ingredients share one blend, no study has tested the mix, and people respond differently. Small is not the same as zero. Every line is on the ingredients page.

Quick check

Should you take Sugar Reset with diabetes medicine?

Five yes-or-no questions. Any yes means a talk with your clinician comes first.

1. Are you under 18, pregnant or nursing?
2. Do you take insulin, a sulfonylurea (like glipizide) or a meglitinide?
3. Do you have high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease, or liver problems?
4. Are you hoping to replace a diabetes medicine with it?
5. Do you avoid caffeine or other stimulants?

What should you ask your clinician before adding a supplement?

Bring the bottle or a photo of its Supplement Facts panel. Then ask:

  1. Could any ingredient add to my medicine?

Point to chromium, gymnema and L-arginine in particular.

  2. Should I check my sugar more often at first?

Ask how often, and which readings should make you call.

  3. What should I do if I go low?

Make sure your plan for treating a low is current and written down.

  4. Does the caffeine matter for me?

Guarana and green tea both add caffeine; the label does not print how much (MSKCC, Guarana).

Keep taking your medicine as prescribed meanwhile.

A wider warning

Why does the FDA warn about diabetes products with hidden drugs?

Because some products sold as supplements contained real prescription drugs. FDA lab tests found undeclared metformin, glyburide and phenformin in some of them (FDA, Illegal diabetes products). Glyburide can cause severe lows. Phenformin was pulled from the US market in 1978.

That warning is about other products, not Sugar Reset. It shows why a promise to treat diabetes is a red flag: only a drug may legally make one (FDA, Dietary supplements Q&A). The Sugar Reset sales page makes disease claims that only a drug may make; we do not repeat them.

If you go ahead

How do you watch your numbers after starting a supplement?

  1. Write down a baseline

Note a week of readings before the first dropper, at your usual times.

  2. Change one thing at a time

Start the supplement alone, not with a new diet, so you can tell what moved.

  3. Log every low

Record the time, reading and what you ate. Share the log at your next visit.

FAQ

Supplements and diabetes medicine FAQ

Can you take Sugar Reset with metformin?

Ask your clinician first. NIDDK does not list metformin among the medicines that usually cause lows, but the ADA warns that supplement ingredients can intensify diabetes medicines in general. Sugar Reset has 23 actives in hidden amounts, so only your care team can weigh it against your full medicine list.

Can blood sugar supplements cause hypoglycemia?

They can, mainly when combined with insulin, sulfonylureas or meglitinides. The ADA says some supplement ingredients could intensify these medicines and push blood sugar too low. Chromium, for example, may add to the glucose-lowering effect of insulin. Watch for readings under 70 mg/dL.

Can I use Sugar Reset drops if I am on insulin?

Nobody has tested that pairing. Insulin carries the highest risk of lows, and Sugar Reset contains chromium plus small amounts of herbs and amino acids studied for glucose effects. Talk to your clinician before adding it, and check your sugar more often at first if you go ahead.

What blood sugar level is too low?

For many people with diabetes, a reading below 70 mg/dL counts as low. Shakiness, sweating, hunger, dizziness and confusion are common signs. Treat a low right away, the way your care team taught you, and get help fast for fainting or seizures.

Should I stop my diabetes pills if I take a supplement?

No. Keep every prescribed medicine exactly as your clinician ordered. No supplement replaces diabetes treatment, and the FDA warns that products promising to treat diabetes can lead people to delay proper care. Bring any supplement question to your next visit instead.

Can gymnema push blood sugar too low?

Small trials showed only mild drops in fasting glucose, and the typical dose is 400 mg three times a day. Sugar Reset holds at most 25 mg of gymnema per serving by label order. LiverTox still lists gymnema as a possible rare cause of liver injury, so mention it to your clinician.
