Gymnema for Blood Sugar: What the Research Shows, and How Much Sugar Reset Holds

Quick answer

Small human trials found mild drops in fasting glucose with gymnema, but it has not been shown to treat diabetes. The typical dose is 400 mg three times a day, or 1,200 mg. Sugar Reset lists gymnema eighth in a 200 mg blend, so a serving holds at most 25 mg. That is about 2% to 4% of the typical daily dose.

The herb

What is gymnema?

Gymnema is a leafy climbing plant, Gymnema sylvestre, used in Ayurvedic tradition. Its leaf extract is sold on its own and inside blends marketed for blood sugar.

In the U.S., gymnema is not approved as therapy for any condition (LiverTox, Gymnema). It is sold as a dietary supplement, which means FDA does not review it before it goes on sale (FDA, Dietary supplements Q&A).

Sugar Reset's sales page names gymnema as one of six key ingredients (Sugar Reset sales page, October 2026). It really is on the label, as "Gymnema Leaf Extract." The question is how much.

The brand's Inside Sugar Reset graphic names gymnema but shows no amounts. The label puts it eighth in the 200 mg blend.

The studies

What does the research on gymnema and blood sugar show?

The research is small and the effects are mild. LiverTox, the NIH database on supplements and the liver, says several small human trials showed mild drops in fasting glucose. It also says gymnema's effectiveness in treating diabetes has not been shown (LiverTox, Gymnema).

Small trials can point in a direction. They cannot settle a question. They often run for a short time, and their results may not hold up in larger groups.

What the evidence supports

A modest signal at full dose, in small studies. Not proof that gymnema treats diabetes, and not proof for any product that holds a fraction of that dose.

Dose check

How much gymnema did studies use, and how much is in Sugar Reset?

LiverTox lists 400 mg three times a day. Sugar Reset holds at most 25 mg per serving.

Label amounts at 2 droppers a day, assuming a dropper holds about 1 mL (the label does not say). Gymnema's real amount is not printed; 25 mg is the most it could be. Research figures are reference doses, not proof that any dose works.

Reaching the typical dose would take 48 servings a day. The label says not to exceed the recommended dose of 2 droppers, so that gap cannot be closed safely with this product.

Label math

How do we know Sugar Reset has at most 25 mg of gymnema?

The label does not print it, but its order sets a limit. Ingredients in a proprietary blend must be listed from heaviest to lightest (FDA, Labeling guide). Gymnema is eighth of 22 in a 200 mg blend.

  1. Start with the blend weight

The label prints "Proprietary Blend 200 mg" per 1 mL serving.

  2. Find gymnema's place

It is the eighth ingredient. Seven heavier ones come before it.

  3. Divide

The eighth item can weigh at most as much as each of the seven above it, so at most 200 ÷ 8 = 25 mg.

That is a ceiling, not a measurement. The real amount could be much lower. Our post on reading a proprietary blend shows the same math for any label.

Evidence

Where does gymnema sit on the evidence ladder?

Above Sugar Reset's formula, well below a lifestyle program or metformin.

  1. 4Guidelines and large trials
  2. 3Several trials
  3. 2Small human trials
  4. 1Lab and animal studies

Higher means stronger evidence for preventing or managing type 2 diabetes. Gymnema's small trials used far more than the at most 25 mg in a serving of Sugar Reset; no supplement was tested in the Diabetes Prevention Program.

Gymnema alone, at full dose, reaches the small-trial rung. A lifestyle program and metformin reached the top in a large federal trial (NIDDK, DPP). A product with a small share of gymnema does not inherit the full-dose result.

Safety

Is gymnema safe for the liver and with diabetes medicines?

Most people tolerate it, but there are two flags. LiverTox rates gymnema a possible rare cause of liver injury, citing a woman with type 2 diabetes who developed jaundice after drinking gymnema tea (LiverTox, Gymnema).

The second flag is low blood sugar. The ADA warns that some supplement ingredients can intensify diabetes medicines (ADA, Vitamins and supplements). Insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides carry the highest risk of lows, and a reading below 70 mg/dL with shakiness or confusion needs treatment right away (NIDDK, Hypoglycemia).

Watch your liver

Stop any gymnema product and call your clinician if you notice yellow skin or eyes, or dark urine.

Before you buy

What should you check on a gymnema product label?

01

A printed amount

Look for a milligram number next to gymnema, not just a blend total.

02

Its place in a blend

If there is no amount, divide the blend weight by gymnema's position for a ceiling.

03

Everything else inside

Long blends can add caffeine or licorice. Sugar Reset contains both guarana and a licorice compound.

04

The claims

A claim to treat diabetes makes a product a drug under FDA rules (FDA, Dietary supplements Q&A).

See every line of Sugar Reset on the gymnema ingredient page.

Guidelines

What does the ADA say about gymnema and other herbs?

The ADA does not recommend them for blood sugar. Its 2026 Standards of Care say herb or spice supplements, along with micronutrients such as chromium, are not recommended for glycemic benefit (ADA, Standards of Care 2026).

The ADA also says supplements are not proven as an effective way to lower blood glucose, and it advises talking with your care team before trying one (ADA, Vitamins and supplements).

FAQ

Gymnema questions, answered

Does gymnema lower blood sugar?

Small human trials found mild drops in fasting glucose with gymnema, according to LiverTox. Its effectiveness in treating diabetes has not been shown, and it is not approved as therapy for any condition in the U.S. The ADA does not recommend herb supplements for blood sugar.

How much gymnema should you take a day?

LiverTox lists a typical recommended dose of 400 mg three times a day, or 1,200 mg in total. That is a reference figure, not proof that any dose works. Ask your clinician before starting, especially if you take diabetes medicine.

Is 25 mg of gymnema enough to make a difference?

No study supports that amount. The label does not print gymnema's weight. Gymnema is eighth in a 200 mg blend, so each 1 mL serving holds at most 25 mg. At 2 droppers a day, assuming a dropper is about 1 mL, that is at most 50 mg, about 4% of the typical daily dose.

Is gymnema bad for your liver?

Rarely, it may be. LiverTox rates gymnema a possible rare cause of liver injury and cites a woman with type 2 diabetes who developed jaundice after gymnema tea. Stop and call a clinician if you notice yellow skin or eyes or dark urine.

Can I take gymnema with metformin or insulin?

Ask your clinician first. The ADA warns that some supplement ingredients can intensify diabetes medicines and cause low blood sugar. Insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides carry the highest risk of lows, so check your readings closely if you are told it is okay.

What is Gymnema sylvestre used for?

It is an Ayurvedic herb sold mostly as a blood sugar supplement. Research is limited to small trials showing mild drops in fasting glucose. It is not an approved treatment for any condition in the U.S., and it does not replace diabetes care.
